Always on Call for the World’s Zoo and Wild Animals

  • The Akademie will continue to support the development of wildlife rehabilitation centers, especially in Bavaria, Romania and Tanzania.
  • The Akademie will also further cooperate with Prof. Dr. Hildebrandt and his team (IZW) in the planning of a specific procedure in oocyte collection with rhinoceroses in zoos and abroad.
  • The telemetric observation of the time and space behavior of the endemic red deer in Ruhpolding/Aschau is planned for early 2018. The objective is to encourage the natural expansion of these animals within their designated regions. The animals will therefore be tagged with radio collars. Henning Wiesner will serve as the on-site animal welfare officer.
  • Prof. Dr. Henning Wiesner travelled twice in 2017 with readers of the “Münchner Merkur” and the “tz” to Africa in order to sensitize them to the fascinating wildlife and the need to offer them protection. Both trips in March and May toured the natural beauties of Tanzania with a focus on the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Lake Ndutu area. Heartfelt thanks for the donations to the Akademie which arrived in the wake of these trips!
  • In the summer of 2017, Prof. Dr. Henning Wiesner and Dr. Julia Gräfin Maltzan instructed approximately 120 veterinary students from Ludwig Maximilian University in the basics of distance immobilization with the blowpipe (propaedeutics in the blowpipe technique). Furthermore, Dr. Maltzan held a guest lecture on the topic “Animal welfare in zoo animal keeping” at the LMU for veterinary students.
  • Dr. Julia Gräfin Maltzan additionally gave a lecture at the University of Gießen as part of the series “Wild biology seminar” on the subject “Veterinary medicine for zoo animals without borders – international missions in animal and species protection worldwide”. She moreover held a talk for the Munich Hunters Association on the topic “Friendly hunting – stalking with the blowpipe.”
